Manfred Goldberg was born in Kassel, Germany in 1930. Manfred's father escaped to Britain in August 1939, just days before war began, but the rest of the family were unable to join him. In 1941 Manfred, his mother and younger brother were sent to the Riga Ghetto in Latvia, followed by evacuation to Stutthof concentration camp near Danzig in 1944, where he spent 8 months as a slave worker. He was finally liberated in Neustadt, Germany in May 1945.
