The nature of any relationship is determined by the amount of closeness felt by the people involved. In order to truly connect to another person we need to know what they are thinking and feeling. Relationships that depend on guesswork alone don’t generally succeed.
The way that we do this is through communication. There are a number of ways to communicate with those around us, by the primary one is through speech. Human beings have the unique capacity to be able to covey both subtle and sophisticated ideas through the power of speech. The Rabbis say that this is an expression of the elevated soul that we possess that sets us aside from the animal kingdom.
The power of speech means that it is a double edged sword, on the one hand we can build relationships through positive and healthy speech. On the other hand our words have the power to destroy relationships beyond repair.
The three weeks are a time to think before we speak to make sure that we build rather than destroy.
