Aish UK is a member of Olami, a global network of Jewish outreach organisations from over 300 locations worldwide which aims to secure a vibrant, engaged and knowledgeable Jewish tomorrow. In December 2017, the annual Olami Summit in Birmingham and was managed by JRoots, with support from Aish UK and other JFT partner organisations.
Over 1,100 delegates from 20 countries started their journey in Central and Southern Spain, before travelling to the UK for an inspiring and empowering educational weekend in Birmingham.
Sacha Johnstone, 24, from Clayhall representing Aish Essex beat off competition from young Jewish leaders to become Olami Regional Ambassador for Europe. The position will see him promote Jewish leadership to students across the continent and he will also join a high calibre leadership programme in Israel involving top Israeli politicians and entrepreneurs. Sacha will also travel as a global representative to Olami centres to present his vision of Jewish greatness.
In his pitch, entitled “ How I came out of the closet as a Jew” in front of several hundred people at the 1,100 delegate Summit, Sacha said he wanted to lead students and young Jews away from being embarrassed about their Judaism to “help people realise not just what it means to be Jewish, but what it means to be a Jew and embrace their Judaism, and that comes from recognising Jewish greatness, taking responsibility to make an impact.”
